-SHRA 2017 Safety Policy Update-
The SHRA will move into the 5th Anniversary season with the following updates to our rules and race procedures, specifically targeting racer safety. These updates were voted into action by the series board of directors and will be mandated by our second event of the season, May 6th at North Star Dragway.
Licensing - All drivers in the AlkyDigger Nostalgia Eliminator 1-2-3 classes will be required to have a current competition license (NHRA or IHRA). Proper licenses, if required by performance elapsed time, will be recommended for SHRA Old School Bracket and Nostalgia Super Stock classes.
Fire Systems - All cars in the AlkyDigger Nostalgia Eliminator 1 and 2 classes will be required to have a fire suppression system. This system at minimum will need to include a 5lb bottle and properly run extinguisher distribution lines to engine compartment and driver cockpit. This will be highly recommended, but not required in the Nostalgia Eliminator 3 class.
Containment System - All cars in the AlkyDigger Nostalgia Eliminator 1-2-3 classes will need to be equipped with an engine containment system. This system can be an engine diaper properly secured to the car's engine or frame rails to contain fluid and materials that could leak from either side of the engine, front or rear seals, etc. An NHRA approved style "pan system" will also be sufficient. Containment systems will be recommended in all SHRA classes but only required for the Nostalgia Eliminator classes.
Driver Safety Gear - Aside from the obvious necessity for current, properly maintained and functioning driver safety equipment including helmets, belts, suits, gloves and head restraint systems if necessary, the AlkyDigger Nostalgia Eliminator 1-2-3 class drivers will be required to utilize a head sock or wear a helmet with a built in equivalent.
The above updates are purely and simply being implemented for the safety of our racers. Additional benefits include reduced clean up time which correlates to a better show of our fans and less track expense in fluid clean up and track conditioning. The SHRA series exists to provide the best nostalgia drag racing show in the Southwest and provide a fun and safe racing environment for it's participants, host tracks and spectators. The SHRA staff appreciates your support and welcomes your feedback. Feel free to contact SHRA Safety Director Thomas Hixson (817-223-0012) or SHRA Tech Director Scott LaFleur (972-567-6255) with any questions concerning these updates. We look forward to continued growth across all six of our series classes and highly anticipate this special 5th Anniversary season of old school drag racing!
